Gerardo Vargas, a.k.a "Promise," was a gang member and high school drop out, firmly in the grip of a New York City ghetto life -- that is, until he enrolled in Satellite High School. Satellite is an alternative school that is giving Gerardo a second chance. The program offers fewer classes that meet for longer periods, so Gerardo has more time to focus on each subject. Much smaller than traditional schools, Satellite allows Gerardo to be on a first name basis with his teachers, which helps create an atmosphere of community and respect. Through internships, Gerardo is evaluating career opportunities while earning credit. Alternative schools may not be for everyone, but Satellite High School is working for Gerardo. We'll follow him through June when he is due to graduate.

Subject: Short
A very short clip featuring a young man describing the shortcomings of his former schools. The film appears truncated. It seems to be leading up to describing the advantages of his current school but is cut off before that happens. The clip comes across as an advertisement and is quite clich├ęd: "You either had to adapt to the animalistic ways of the other students or become their prey. And me, I could never be any man's victim. ... I started not to care about my Bible, my school, myself or others." One wonders who wrote the script. I have to disagree with cashel, I don't think this clip has Oscar potential.

Subject: A lesson for Hollywood:::::Face up to the real USA
This is an exciting movie. Although it is short, it could be expanded and the result could be a fine feature movie. It might even win an Oscar and only then would the hollywood cynics be disturb from their single minded pursuit of money. They might even wake up and give something back to the community. I wish that Oprah would consider this film..
